1st Special Forces Operational Detachment—Delta HQ Fort Bragg, North Carolina A.k.a. “The Unit”

Colonel Thomas Clancy sat behind his desk, wiggling his ass as he struggled to crack an uncrackable back, his sciatica driving him nuts. His doctor had told him to do some cobra yoga position thing, which sounded an awful lot like what he thought a downward dog was. He had never done yoga, and had no intention of starting now, but he was getting old and shit was falling apart.

A few of the guys had been shooting the shit at the mess last night, joking that they were considering retiring then heading to Ukraine to finally kill some Russians, since they’d been cheated out of that opportunity with the end of the Cold War. It was just old soldiers talking big after a few brews, but man, right now, the idea sounded fantastic.

If it weren’t for their nukes, we could go in right now and take them out.

The Russian Army had proven incompetent, poorly equipped and supplied, with troops unwilling and unable to fight. They had shown that Russia was no longer a real threat to anyone, their only genuinely terrifying weapon their nuclear arsenal. Yet even that, if it were maintained as well as the rest of their forces, might not be the threat the West thought it was, not to mention the fact there was no proverbial button. The maniac in charge couldn’t just press a button and launch. All he could do was order the launch, then hopefully someone in the chain of command would shoot the piece of shit in the head and save the world a lot of headaches.

Someone had to kill him, but it had to be a Russian, otherwise the country might galvanize behind their dead nutbar and cause a real problem.

The incompetence on the battlefield explained why the Russians were using Wagner Group so frequently. Wagner was a private gun-for-hire outfit, primarily ex-Russian military, heavily concentrated on the Spetsnaz side of things. They had been used extensively in Syria and Libya, and were now rumored to be heading into Ukraine. They were effective and brutal, as they didn’t follow the same rules as soldiers, and they all wanted to be there—the money was exceptional.

It reminded him of the mercenaries of old, when the great empires of history began farming out their wars, even their own security, to those other than their own citizens, who preferred to enjoy the spoils of what had been gained by past generations. It was always a sign of decline when a country didn’t believe enough in what it was doing to hire out the dirty work rather than do it themselves.

Like today with Russia, or his own country in Iraq and Afghanistan, or so many other shitholes around the world where America wanted a presence but too often sent in private contractors.

Maybe it’s time to retire.

He could. He had enough years in, his wife was itching to spend more time with him, and he wasn’t happy with where the world was heading.
